StreetSport in a nutshell

MISSION

StreetSport’s mission is to meet the needs of people in our diverse communities by holding events in public spaces which allow people to participate in different forms of physical activity.

VISION

Healthy communities where active living is exciting and accessible and people are motivated and empowered to creatively use public spaces.

How did StreetSport get started?

The StreetSport project is led by a team of 2011 DiverseCity Fellows, an action-oriented leadership program of CivicAction and Maytree that brings together rising city-builders who are committed to taking collective leadership to address social and economic issues across the greater Toronto region.

Why be active on streets and in public spaces?

Adults surveyed in the 2011 Get Active Toronto study indicated that reasons for avoiding physical activity include feeling socially isolated, intimidated or embarrassed.

  • Events held on the street are fun and engaging and more likely to inspire community participation than traditional venues.
  • In addition to promoting a healthy lifestyle, Street Sport builds and empowers community.
  • The outcomes of a Street Sport event include stronger neighbourhood networks and increased civic engagement.

Why get involved?

StreetSport offers a range of active living opportunities, representing different cultural traditions, which are available to people of different skill levels. By offering these in one location, we create connections and bring people from diverse backgrounds together through one of humankind’s great unifying mediums: sport. StreetSport works with sports teams, community organizations, civic groups, corporations and groups concerned with active living to plan and implement events. In the process, we increase civic engagement and the capacity for neighbourhood partners to work collaboratively to put on their own StreetSport events.
